A warm experience in the center of Munich

Zum Alten Markt is a very well located, family run restaurant with a fantastic atmosphere. Dining in this restaurant will make you feel welcomed no matter if you are a tourist or a local. The food has a great taste and portions are quite large. The only downside is the food selection for children and overall main course that is quite limited. The service is absolutely fantastic, they excelled throughout the meal and could not get any better. For a good dining experience like this, it is expected for prices to be higher that your normal everyday restaurant. Overall this was a fantastic experience and We would be happy to suggest this restaurant if you are ever looking for a nice place to dine within the centre of Munich.

Location

Settled in the heart of Munich within walking distance from Marienplatz is where you find this charming family run restaurant. Its rustic style quickly catches your attention as soon as you set your eyes on it and continues to surprise as you enter the building.

Zum Alten Markt is located within a small court that during the summer months it becomes vibrant with outdoor seating with tables and music entertainment. When you enter the building you are welcome by a very rustic look that starts from the medieval style door and continues with the different artefacts that are scattered within the restaurant.

The restaurant is quite small and cosy which makes the place welcoming and warm. During our visit, the restaurant was quite busy, even if not during high season, and had a variety of customers ranging from younger to older couples, single table, locals, tourists and families (us).

Service

Throughout our Munich and the south Bavarian holiday we found service to be below standards, but Zum Alten Markt was able to surprise us by providing a perfectly delivered service.

If we would have to use a single word to describe the service I would use the word “Warm”. All the staff members were extremely kind and took the time to give us all the information we needed to understand the german dishes.

The staff would come and check on us constantly and we always felt like there was someone around if we ever needed it. Every time we had a question, We received a professional answer, followed by a warm smile.

As it is custom during family holiday ,we tried to make a quick selfy to make a long lasting memory, but while we tried to somehow fit within my overstretched arm, one of the waiteress (always close by), kindly offered to take a picture for us. The part that I like is not this (even if this does not happen usually until you ask), but it was the fact that the picture was not rushed. The waitress took her time, took multiple pictures, asked us to move close and took some more, and before ending, even opened the door and tried to take one last picture.

You can see that there is an harmony between the staff, everything moves well and it is organised and it all seems to be under control and relaxed! Kudos to the team!

Menu

Let’s start this section with a disclaimer that we are not super knowledgeable on traditional Bavarian cuisine and the information provided in this section are mainly subjective. The menu seemed to include a good selection of traditional Bavarian food, such as the famous pork schnitzel, but also included some nice unique twist with unique ingredient combination mixed with the classics. A quick example could be given by how the schnitzel was served with a coating that included pumpkin seeds. This change, even if small, made the experience enjoyable.

The kids had menu was quite limited, in fact they just got offered a children portion schnitzel, but this was actually not a problem in our case as they really enjoyed the dish.

For the adults, the menu offered nice dished, but was quite limited to a few options. Prices that were quite reasonable for what was offered. We decided to share an antipasto with local cheeses and cold meats followed by main course.

Taste

We started our dinner with a share platter of cold meat and cheeses called “Gourmet Board“. We bought this to share within the table and were surprised to actually see that the size was large enough for the full family. The selection of meat, cheese and sauces were absolutely delicious and traditional.

After a nice break, we received our main courses. Once again, even if you would expect a “fine dining” portion size for the type of place, what we received was quite large portion, while still being very high quality.

Every dish had good flavour and all ingredients complimented each other.

Price

The total price of our stay was 133 euro. This was the highest bill we had during our vacation, but it was expected. Most of the dishes were well priced given the size and quality, but items such as water and child schnitzel seemed to be a little over-priced.
